What is external wall insulation?

External wall insulation (EWI) is a system of insulation boards fixed to the outside of a property, protected by a reinforced basecoat and finished with render. Instead of insulating room by room, it wraps the building in a continuous thermal layer.

It is most relevant to solid-wall and non-traditional properties, homes that cannot benefit from cavity wall insulation. Done properly, it improves warmth and comfort, protects the structure from weather and gives the property a clean, modern finish.

Because the system sits on the outside of the building, the quality of installation and detailing, not the insulation material itself, is usually what decides how well it performs over time.
